A BLUEPRINT FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

A BLUEPRINT FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

While there is much talk in the construction industry about net zero carbon goals, the uncomfortable truth is that global CO2 emissions are currently at an all-time high of more than 412 ppm (parts per million) – more than 60 ppm more than the generally accepted sustainable level.

Construction’s part in this is undeniable – it has been estimated, for example, that the built environment generates almost 40% of annual global CO2 emissions. Of those emissions, building materials and the process of construction are responsible for 11%.

While the construction industry has historically been reluctant to change its ways, attitudes are beginning to shift, with project developers adopting new materials, new technologies and new methodologies aimed at lowering carbon footprints without necessarily lowering profits. In general, these changes reflect the attitude of a public demanding that companies do better and operate more sustainably.

World governments are also turning their attention more and more towards the construction industry, due to its potential as an economic driver, but also its potential to make huge leaps towards net zero.

THE SUMMIT

KHL’s Sustainable Construction Summit will examine the trend being termed the triple bottom line – people, planet, profit – and ask whether sustainable construction can be good for both the planet and for business.

With presentations from experts in engineering, building design and contracting, this online event will look at new ideas on energy use, materials, logistics and financing – developments that promise to turn construction projects green, while keeping a lid on costs.
